黑人患晚期前列腺癌,you’re joining an unenviable club: Black men are both more likely to get the disease and more likely to get an aggressive type. In fact, Black men are over twice as likely to die from prostate cancer compared to white men. But newer data offers some hope: When prostate cancer is diagnosed at the same stage, Black men might be more likely to survive it than white men. In other words, the sooner you receive your advanced PC diagnosis and start treatment, the better your chances of beating this disease. Here’s everything you need to know to stack the odds in your favor (and help others do the same).

There is a tendency to associate advanced prostate cancer with a risk to manhood and a “macho man type of ideal,” Dr. Ramin says. “But it’s also important to balance that against your life. While no man necessarily enjoys getting a rectal exam or their blood drawn, it is important to get tested and know that you do not need to be afraid of the results.” With the advent of modern technology in prostate cancer treatments, “many men can maintain their sense of manhood, including their sexuality and bladder control, and still have effective prostate cancer treatments.”

Keep in mind that a high level of PSA does not necessarily mean you have cancer. A key thing to know here: Black men average higher PSAs than white men, and it can be helpful to have a baseline number for yourself. Sometimes a manual rectal exam is performed at the same time or after you get your results, and while it does involve the doctor inserting a gloved finger into the rectum, it should only take one to two minutes and should not be painful.

Find a Doctor You Trust

Make Connections

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men besides skin cancer, and it’s especially prevalent among Black men. Yet that may seem surprising because many men don’t talk about their disease. Most men find comfort in connecting with others in their community. You can find groups designed for Black men to discuss all things prostate cancer online, including anonprofit founded by Butts(专注于编制当地前列腺癌资源)和一个forum由前列腺癌基础组织。

有hundreds of trialslooking for men with prostate cancer to test new therapies—especially Black men, who have been underrepresented in research—and it can give you early access to the newest drugs and technologies. For some, clinical trials end up being lifesaving. Ask your doctors about trials they know of in your area or search for one yourself atClinicalTrials.gov.

“One of the great powers of social media is affecting cultural change,” Dr. Ramin says. Butts decided to join his father in writing a book about their experiences because there was so little written by men who weren’t doctors. Know that sharing your story about life with advanced prostate cancer, through blogging, writing, or posting on social media, can help break down barriers and stigma: “When the mindset of a whole community changes, you get to where you want to be in terms of health policy,” Dr. Ramin says.
